Dropbox is seeking $250 million in funding that would value the company at more than $8 billion. The last time that Dropbox took on money was in October 2011 when it raised $250 million at a valuation of about $4 billion. If this new fundraising round becomes successful, it will more than double the valuation of the company. It is not immediately clear whether or not investors and venture capital firms are willing to invest in Dropbox at this high valuation.
In my opinion, I believe Dropbox is a coming that could also be taken public as another route to raising capital. The company has over 200 million users and 4 million businesses and compared to other tech-start ups, Dropbox seems to have one of the highest growths. Compared to 2010, Dropbox users have increased by over 10 times. This new trend in tech companies seeking such high valuations, such as with Twitter and Snapchat, will be very interesting to follow.
